The gray streaks in the middle section of Oljeto Mesa is where contaminated soil was released and hosed down in August 2011. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's $7.5 million project used a cable system to transport over 15 million liters of material up the 244 meters-high Oljeto Mesa, where it was brought from by wind and water. The contaminated area around the residences registered 9000-20000 gamma counts/minute. At the foot of the mesa, measurements indicated above 50000 counts/minute in several spots.
