Devil's Garden, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Utah. April 2008.
Devil's Garden is about a 12-mile drive east on the Hole-in-the-Rock Road, which is the gateway to the Canyons of the Escalante. It's an aptly named geological wonder of a place. Sunrise and sunset hours bath the formations with golden light. I was all alone on an overcast evening when I first arrived, and came back the next day to capture the Garden in glowing colors. But, in retrospect, I feel that this relatively color and light deprived photograph conveys the beautiful solitude I felt in the desert better than those blessed with a true sunset.
