Puerto Varas, Comuna de Puerto Varas, Provincia de Llanquihue, Región de Los Lagos, Chile. April 2023.

Sitting on the southwestern corner of Lago Llanquihue, Puerto Varas is the biggest town on the lake. It was founded in 1854 by German immigrants. The town’s primary landmark is the Teutonic-style La Iglesia Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, which was built in 1915-1918 as a to-scale replica of Marienkirche in Germany’s Black Forest. Made entirely from wood, its Baroque interior boasts two cupolas, built to the maximum height possible without metal supports.
