Coal Mine Canyon (Honooji), Navajo Nation, Coconino County, Arizona. November 2011; December 2016.
Coal Mine Canyon lies on the border between the Hopi and Navajo Indian Reservations, although most of the canyon rim belongs to the Navajo, who call the place Honooji. The better known name is due to an old Mormon coal mine up the rim. The rocks around the rim represent various thin layers of the soft and crumbly Dakota sandstone, and they stand on top of thicker bands of the Entrada Formation, with red, white, black and gray being the main colors.
