Provincia de Llanquihue, Región de Los Lagos, Chile. April-May 2023.
Really an immense inland sea, Lago Llanquihue is South America’s third-largest natural lake. It covers a surface area of 875 km2, plunges to a depth of 350 m, and its crystal blue waters are bound by Volcán Osorno and Volcán Calbuco. The Mapuche believed this lake and its dominions to be a realm of monsters and evil spirits.
The Spanish discovered Lago Llanquihue in 1552, but it was not until the arrival of German immigrants in the 19th century that Europeans managed to colonized the lake’s shores.
